Can Eating Fish Alleviate Symptoms of Depression? #Chapter1 #13

Can eating fish alleviate symptoms of depression? This podcast episode delves into Jennifer Stirling-Campbell’s most pivotal suggestion to those wanting to overcome chronic depression. Through dietary changes, and most particularly through consuming fish and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, Jennifer’s life changed drastically in only three months. No longer dependent on medication, she still relies on her diet and other healing methods to moderate her environment and her mood. She also stresses the importance of consistency when adopting dietary changes that will allow for high omega-3 consumption on a daily basis.

if Fish can cure depression, which fish should i eat?

Here are some rules of thumb:

  1. First of all, choose fish that are wild caught. Farmed fish are often given antibiotics. Additionally, they are usually fed grain, which causes fatty fish. This results in fish that are full of omega-6 fatty acids, and less of omega-3. It’s the omega-3’s you want!
  2. Eat bottom feeding fish and other bottom feeders like shrimp sparingly
  3. If you choose tuna, only eat 8 oz of tuna per week and look for sustainable options like Natural Catch.
  4. Avoid highly-processed breaded fish that use seed and vegetable oils.
  5. Watch the video below by @HealthNovity for suggestions on which fish to prioritize (and which ones to avoid) and why.

If I eat fish Three Times a week, will it lower my odds of depression and get me off of prozac?

According to several studies, moderate fish and long chain omega-3 PUFA intake is associated with lower odds of depression. I have FIRSTHAND experience with this. Eating fish consistently definitely worked to alleviate symptoms of depression for me and members of my family! However, it takes three months of consistency before most people feel results. What’s the trick? A person must eat fish (as described in the paragraph above) three times a week for at least three months.

After three months, it is important to make eating fish three times a week a permanent part of your diet. In fact, eating fish three times a week was the ONLY major life-change I made before I experienced healing from depression. After three months of eating fish 3 days a week, I was able to get off Prozac and I never needed it again! Will eating fish lower your odds of depression and help get you off of your medication (with help from your doctor!!)? There’s only one way to find out! Start eating more fish…starting today! But I hate eating fish! ok….then eat ONLY organic meat!

You can eat nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables high in omega-3 fatty acids, but whatever meats you choose will make a difference! Rather than getting whatever is on sale, choose only organic beef, chicken, and other organic meat products to supplement the omega-3’s in your diet. Why organic? Inorganically-fed animals are usually fed diets high in grain, which creates fat animals. This results in delicious, marbled meat. However, these meats contain an imbalanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, organic meats aren’t generally as tender or delicious. While it might feel painful to pay more for a less-tender meat, remember that your body absolutely needs the omega-3’s found in lean meat–and NOT the omega-6’s!

Take fish oil supplements daily

Regardless of what your diet looks like, if you want to overcome depression but you aren’t eating fish, I recommend you take fish oil supplements daily. But what makes a good fish oil supplement?

  1. Research the company. Are they using sustainable methods to aquire their oil?
  2. Does the supplement smell fishy? If it does, it’s probably old or rancid. Fish oil supplements that don’t have a strong “fish” smell are generally the ones I trust.

My Recommendations:

Teal, yellow, and white box of Nordic Naturals fish oil supplements

Nordic Naturals

Carlson’s Norwegian Fish Oil

Eat Nuts, Seeds, fruits and vegetables High in omega-3 fatty acids!

I always knew that nuts and seeds were high in omega-3 fatty acids. But did you know that fruits and vegetables have omega-3’s in them too? Here is a list of the fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of omega-3’s. Substitute some of these for whatever snack you typically grab; your brain will thank you!
